Arctostaphylos refugioensis, Refugio Manzanita is native to the Santa Ynez Mountains, near Santa Barbara. This manzanita grows in the chaparral. Associated plants range from Styrax sp., Adenostoma sp, Ceanothus spinosus, to Quercus dumosa. The flowers are pearly white and new growth is tinged with red. It looked lush and beautiful, with no additional water, when we received only 8 inches of rainfall. It even did fine in full sun in our hot (110deg F) dry summers.
