An evergreen shrub that can grow to 12 feet or so, but generally is fast to eight feet, then beyond that real slow. This mountain mahogany is fuller and not as narrow as the Island form (alnifolius) but a very nice hedge plant between you and the neighbors. Throw a few Toyon and Ceanothus in for color and you have a wonderful hedge that everyone can live with. In the mountains of San Diego it is common on the hillsides mixed with Rhus ovata, Quercus agrifolia, Keckiella cordifolia, various scrub oaks, Ceanothus species, Arctostaphylos rainbowensis, Arctostaphylos glauca and Arctostaphylos glandulosa. The soils range from decomposed granite to a clay loam.
