The Blue Corgi is a compact and short round, Big Berry manzanita. The original plant was selected by Bert Wilson in an extremely harsh location in San Benito county. The fifty year old bushes there only reached head height and were commonly smaller and nearly rotund.
The bark is cherry red and the leaves are very light colored. At Halloween you could put a coat and hat on the little guy and he would probably be able to collect candy. If you prune the top you can make a 2-3 ft. high ground cover out of it. This manzanita has been the most successful Manzanita in the nursery with the climate extremes. It always looks great. It thrived on multiple years of 12 in or less of rainfall, months of temperature over 100° some days over 110, The coldest winter since 1980, Snow temperatures under 20°. It is one of my favorite Manzanita (Penny). If you want the drought, cold, and heat, tolerance of a Big Berry Manzanita but you don't have the space or you need something smaller this Manzanita is the best.
