(Epilobium latifolia johnstonii)This form of California fuchsia grows in the mountains of southern California at middle elevations. It has done fine in the Deserts and interior valleys and along the coast as long as it is not in view of the ocean. It grows 2-3' tall and can have so many flowers that you can not see the foliage. A fuchsia that is an intense orange-red loved by the hummingbirds and the Dogface butterfly. The Dogface almost crawls into the big red flower to get to the nectar. This California fuchsia needs water only if your rainfall is less than 10 inches. It will tolerate garden conditions. If you live in the San Joaquin Valley this red hummingbird flower is for YOU. The flowers get huge and the plant is a mass of orange three feet tall.
The stems of this California Fuchsia can look like Bert in a mini-dress. Best hidden behind something so only the top of his hat is showing.
