Sierra Gooseberry,
Ribes roezlii,>/i>is a wonderful showy deciduous shrub with edible berries (great for gooseberry jam). The flower show is eye popping. The plant is tight and clean. Use in moist part shade. This gooseberry does fine under trees or along the north wall of a house. Thorns are not major problem on this plant. Sierra Gooseberry grows along the western side of the Sierras and Northern California Mountains and in the yellow pine forests. In Southern California Sierra gooseberry is restricted to moist mountain tops, usually a few steps from a spring. The taxonomy in the Jepson Manual is completely flawed on this species for you budding taxonomists/botanists, keep your hair and look at McMinn.
