Juglans hindsii

Northern California walnut is a deciduous tree to 50 ft that is native in scattered spots throughout California. A fast tree with edible nuts, garden tolerant. There has been some controversy as to whether these trees were planted by Native Americans around their encampments. I have always found trees planted in areas where Native Americans were known to be, usually within a half-mile. The nursery is within a mile of one of these old encampments. This is the rootstock for all the older walnut orchards. The nuts are of good quality but hard to crack.The walnuts are one of the strongest allelopathic plants and are difficult to garden under. These trees are not really a forest tree, more of a campsite tree. Near a water source, but not in the water source, like a campsite.So they live in chaparral and woodland plant communities, but as campers, where there's a water source.
